Grow Brinjals and Tomatoes together

Grow Brinjals (eggfruit) with your tomatoes as an indicator plant. The brinjals are more sensitive than the tomatoes and will show nutrient deficiencies and pest problems first.

If you keep the brinjals healthy, you will automatically have excellent tomato plants. This is one of the ways to make use of companion planting.

Catnip for Pest Control

Catnip is not only great for cats but also a deterrent for flea beetles, ants and other small insects due to the active ingredient nepetalactone. Infuse a cup of leaves in 500ml water and spray on infected plants or sprinkle leaves around it.

Pennyroyal for Pest Control

Pennyroyal is an ant repellent which can be used under roses and also sprinkled in other places around the house. Sprinkle some in the Worm Bin if ants are a problem together with Tansy. If you have ants on your plants then have a closer look and see if there are any aphids present. Ants collect the honeydew secreted by the aphids. Spray infested plants with an organic spray to reduce the aphid population and the ants will move somewhere else.

Snails getting out of hand?

One solution is to lay down grit - many gritty substances make effective snail repellents. Gritty substances will prevent them from crossing over the barrier to get to the plants. Crushed eggshells, sand or diatomaceous earth sprinkled around plants that the garden snails seem to prefer will deter and eventually kill these pests. Rooibos mulch is also now available at selected nurseries to create a physical barrier.

Featured Herb

Chervil:
Subtlety is key when using chervil in cooking. Although chervil will never dominate a dish, many cooks use it to enhance the flavours of other herbs accompanying it in recipes. Chervil is an important inclusion in the traditional French fines herbs blend of tarragon, parsley, chives and chervil. Chervil complements scrambled eggs and omelettes, cream cheese and herb sandwiches, salads and even mashed potatoes.
