| Moon Gardening: planting on different days |

In general people are familiar with their personal sun sign, finding joy and excitement or a bit of anxiety glancing at the horoscope column of their favourite magazine or newspaper. Every month the moon travels through all 12 signs of the tropical zodiac (circle of animals) and spends just over two days in a sign. Due to their natural signification the signs give us certain days that will be more beneficial for specific garden activities within the waxing and waning cycle. Each sign of the zodiac relates to one of the fundamental elements in nature and is classified as either being a fire, earth, air or water sign. When we look at a plant then the earth signs relate to the roots, the water signs to the leaves, air to flowers and fire to the fruit and seed. I make use of the Tropical Zodiac, the division of the sky in 12 signs, with the first sign of Aries beginning when the Sun crosses the equator. This correlates with the movement of the Sun between the Northern and Southern hemispheres, giving us our four seasons. Plant growth depends on the overall weather conditions, the seasonal changes in temperature and day length that is determined by the position of the Sun and the Moon. Earth signs – Root days

The leaf signs of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces give the opportunity to sow leafy vegetables during the waxing phase. It is also a good time to harvest leafy herbs and vegetables for optimum taste and quality for fresh consumption. These are also the most fertile signs and it is the ideal time to apply organic fertilizer, spray some foliar feed and spread some compost around the plants during the waning phase. Clipping hedges and shaping topiaries are best done on a leaf day during the waning phase. This will ensure healthy new leaves but with reduced growth rate, reducing the need for maintenance and keeping the shape intact for longer. |

Air signs – Flower days
Flowers, the crown of the plant, will benefit from the days when the Moon is in the air signs of Libra and Aquarius. As the Moon grows in light during the waxing phase it is a good time to pick some flowers on a flower day to ensure a longer vase life indoors. It is also a good time to sow some flowering annuals and vegetables. If you want to preserve flowers for potpourri then it is wise to wait for a flowering day during the waning phase because the water content will be lower and your flowers will dry quicker, retaining their fragrance and colour. |

Fire signs – Fruit & Seed days
Fire signs, relate to the fruit and seed of the plant and are associated with Aries and Sagittarius. Sow vegetables and herbs of which the seeds are used and harvest for best quality and flavour during the waxing phase. If you enjoy preserving and drying fruit and seed for future consumption, then it is best to wait for a fire day during the waning phase. The reduced water content will reduce the risk of rot setting in during the drying period. |

Barren signs
When is it time to take a break from it all? Nature has given the days when the moon is in Gemini (air), Leo (fire) and Virgo (earth) as the days to stop and smell the roses. These are the barren signs that don't favour any plant growth and it is better to use this time for some hard landscaping projects, maintenance and repairs. This is also an opportunity to do some weed control, especially during the waning phase, either spraying an herbicide or manual removal. The waning phase ensures rapid movement of the herbicide towards the root system for complete eradication or starvation in case of weed slashing. |
